Chapter Thirteen

After fifteen minutes of listening to Ben, Miss Bunny, Henrietta, and Dr. Downey trying to settle the Swine Shifter (Her words, not mine.) down to a dull roar, I was ready to try anything or magick up a set of noise-canceling ear muffs. Thankfully, I didn't have to do either because Granny Cleo took matters into her own hands.

Moving the mountain that is my Mate out of her way in the kindest way possible, (Read that as snapping, “Move your ass, Boy, or I’ll move it for ya’.”) the eldest Shifter known to any of us walked right up to the third (Who knew there were three of them? I absolutely refuse to wait for a Big Bad Wolf to come huffin’ and puffin’.) Miss Poffenporker, slapped her across the face, and screeched, “Snap out of it if you want any help from us.”

An audible gasp ushered in ten full seconds of silence in which the tick-tick-tick of Miss Bunny's huge, wagon-wheel clock on the wall sounded like thunder. Ending the respite came a sharp sniveling inhale from Prudence Poffenporker. Rubbing the bright red handprint on the side of her pleasingly plump, pink cheeks, she hiccupped, "W-what the h-hell did you d-do th-that for, C-cleo?"

“To shut you up,” Granny snapped. “Did ya’ think all that caterwaulin’ was helpin’ anyone – especially Patti?”

“I…w-well…hiccup-sob…I w-was upset.”

“No shit!” Granny barked. “That much was obvious. You…”

“Cleo,” my mom politely interrupted. “Why don’t we let Daisy and the girls see if they can get the information we need from Prudence? You and I can go make some iced tea for everybody.” Giving me a quick wink, to which I mouthed, “Thank you, Mom,” she turned to my landlord and asked, “Is that alright with you, Miss Bunny?”

“Sure is,” the honorable Mayor of Hairy Wort got right to her feet and tapped her partner on the shoulder. “Henrietta and I’ll come help, too. I imagine everybody needs a bite to eat, as well. Feels like we’ve been here for a coon’s age.”

(Don't tell my mother, but I can't remember a time she ever so much as put ice in a glass. Being a Goddess and all, she thought it, and it happened. I kinda wished I could be a fly on the wall in the kitchen just to see if she actually knew how to make tea, but I had other things to attend to.)

With the, shall we say, crankier of our crew otherwise occupied and not glowering at the poor, disheveled Pig, Prudence took a few deep breaths, and although she was still shaking and her eyes were way too wide, she started to give us some details. "I was supposed to meet Patricia tonight for dinner. You see, that's what we always do or did – all three of us." A single tear slid down her cheek. "We had to get all the details ready to meet with Mr. Vincent to discuss P-Penelope's memorial service."

Her last words trailed off into a silent sob as I envisioned the way-too-creepy Mr.
